Oh Brother

Today's post is about brothers. Not having any experience on this front, I look to Michelle.

Michelle has a brother (and a sister - Kristina, lives in Hemet with her husband, Adam, and works for a missions organization). His name is Jonathan. He's a freshman at SPU (cute, our siblings have matching life experiences - little freshmen at "Pacific Universities"). I've never met him.

Now, Michelle has lived in Santa Barbara for 4 years. She goes home to Seattle briefly every summer, but her life has really moved to California (point: CA). However, she was able to go home for Easter this year, and this is what she was welcomed with:

Such sibling love.

As I looked at these, I decided there had to be a song/poem to describe brother-sister relationships. So, being the scholar I am, I googled it. One of the top hits that kept coming up was "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by the Hollies. As I am rather unfamiliar in general with music from this time period (60s? 70s? I don't actually know - blame my parents, I do :) ), I had never heard this song. But the title seemed appropriate, even just based on the top picture. However, the lyrics are actually pretty powerful and really fit their relationship, so I'd like to share them:

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows when
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another.

It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

He's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.
